He lived to the ripe old age of 94, that’s a pretty good run.
He also holds the distinction of longest-lived U.S. President in history, unless and until Jimmy Carter lives past March of next year, where he’ll take the lead (Carter is only 4 months younger than Bush Sr).

Obvious question, does the current office holder attend the funeral?

In case your attachment got Kinja’d
I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

Not surprising, but still sad. I didn’t vote for him, but I have an enormous amount of respect for him and his service to our country. RIP, Mr. President.

While I disagreed with his political beliefs I respected him, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for his son.

Very sad news and my condolences to his family and friends.

No. Period.
*the way it should be unfortunately

Hell, I even miss his dipshit son these days.

Do they want him to attend?
![]() 12/01/2018 at 00:27 |

I’d wager no.

Got shot down in 1944 and was almost eaten by Japanese troops. That’s a true story .

It’s interesting to wonder what would have happened had Cheney not gotten his claws into him. I don’t think he ever would have been a great president, but without the axis of evil surrounding him things might have turned out quite differently.

He was probably the last true country club republican.

I hope that the family politely asks him not to attend.
I mean, he offended many members of the family.

That’s an interesting thought experiment. I’m trying to remember what he was like as TX governor. I lived through all five years of it, and remember nothing. Maybe that says a lot about your theory.

I’d rather have another 8 years of 43 than 45
![]() 12/01/2018 at 00:34 |

Or the last true conservative Republican.

Republicans were terrified after the nomination (or election, don’t remember which) that they had just picked their own version of Clinton. Someone who would govern from the center.
Hell, in his second term when Cheney and the neocon crew had been mostly discredited, he wasn’t nearly as divisive.

He was actually a very good governor in the sense that that he was able to bring Ds and Rs together.

You know, after an ordeal like that, I would not begrudge the man for never buying a Japanese car.

And now I think about how Trump has surrounded himself with the likes of first Steve Bannon and now Richard Bolton. Trump is a dotard and is easily influenced. Russia would not be fucking around in Crimea like they are right now if there were a less malleable president in the White House. This is going to be a long and scary two years.

Which is more than I can say for Abbott, Patrick , Paxton, et al.

Obviously he’s still got time left to pull something but at least 45 hasn’t got us into a war that cost thousands of our peoples lives and tens of thousands of wounded all for something that never existed ( I’m referring to Iraq war not Afghanistan).

Totally agree, didn't agree with his politics, esp. tax policy, but always felt he was an honorable man who wanted to do what he thought best for the country. Sad turn of affairs that got us where we are now. Also WWII vet. No matter what I do, my cajones will be shrunken little peanuts compared to the men and women of the greatest generation.
